in a surprise but welcome move, Jomsocial have released version 2.8 beta 2 to the wider Joomla community and not just developers. This means they may be inundated with support issues but it also means they'll know about them quicker.
Any Joomla 1.5 references have been removed from the code, the template has had a complete revamp in readiness for Joomla 3.0, it's faster and leaner than previous version, and finally the translated versions will be easier managed.
All in all a surprising but welcome release of this Jomsocial beta and we think developers and the community will welcome it.
Azrul has released Jomsocial 2.8 to Jomsocial developers.
An innocent little paragraph in the recent post on the official Jomsocial Blog has sparked a heady storm in forums with Joomla Developers utilising the Jomsocial Component.
While tens of thousands of intalls of the popular social network for Joomla exist on version 1.5 of the CMS, Azrul has announced that it will be abandoning the Joomla 1.5 platform in order to create a more slimed down, efficient version of Jomsocial.
What does this mean for the existing web site owners that are currently running Joomla 1.5 websites and Jomsocial?
Well it means that there will be no more upgrades available to their systems. They'll get no security updates, possibly opening the door for their sites to be hacked. Also, it means that they won't be able to go to the latest version of Jomsocial and all the benefits it has until they upgrade their core CMS to Joomla 2.5 at least.
For many small operators the cost of this may be prohibitive, leaving many Joomla social networks based in Jomsocial in no mans land. Multiply this all the actual users of Jomsocial and there's going to be hunderds and thousands of dissapointed niche social network users over the coming months.
We realise that people should move to keep their sites up to date, but for many, this particular update just isn't viable. What this means for Jomsocial in the longer term is unknown.
Joomla UNLEASHED have updated their Auto Login Plugin for Joomla and it's now fully compatible with Community Builder and Jomsocial. Get it at http://www.joomlaunleashed.com
In an unsurprising move, Azrul has ditched Zend Framework from it's Jomsocial component for Joomla.
This is in conjunction with news that they'll soon be relasing a CMS independent version of Jomsocial, one that can be installed and is standalone.
Zend Framework, made the installation of Jomsocial elongated and caused problems during install. So from our point of view this is a positive step.
