Joomla Developer News

The very latest Joomla Community Magazine has been released for December, 2012.  And it's a cracker this month too!  The writers are really firing on all cylinders this month.

Highlights this month include the astonishing statistic that 23% of attendees to the Joomla World Conference were infact female.  A figure that is pretty healthy.  But can the Joomla Community do more to help women get into Joomla?  Find out in Diane Henning's article.  I noted that this article was the most read.   Maybe the 77% male Joomla Jockeys attending had something to do with that...

On a down side, we have a joomla developer reviewing and comparing extensions that display content in a module - including his own extension.  Not sure if we can trust this comparision chart entirely but it does give other developers a look at where they're lagging. Not sure what the Joomla Community makes of the comparison by one of the developers who's product is being compared however.

By far the most interesting article was by Sarah Watz, and it detailed the plan for a Joomla Certification Program. Currently the community is looking for people who can provide help in setting up this program in a variety of areas. We'll definitely be seeing how we can help, having provided Joomla training for councils and governments.

The First Joomla Choice Extensions were also listed in this issue. Ten Joomla extensions developed by a variety of Joomla Developers are there.

It's that time of the month when the new Joomla Community magazine comes out and we think it's a belter this month.

Hung Dinh takes us through the 20 great new things in Joomla 3.0 versus Joomla 2.5,.  In our opinion, getting the admin interface to be responsive is one of the greatest things that Joomla has done in a long time.  Now sites can be managed on a variety of devices, wherever you have an internet connection.  Even your smart phone is now a geniunely usable tool for making admin changes to the Joomla system.  We've seen a raft of clients move to a Joomla Responsive template too and the benefits of responsive admin to clients provides a huge selling tool.

Another highlight from Hung's list is a spotlight on the new interface in Joomla 3.0 which is having quite a profound effect on Admins.  It's a major revamp and does take a bit of getting used to, but any Admins that have used any of the big Joomla template providers should be used to it's style.  In our opinion the new Joomla interface is fantastic and really adds a professional shine to CMS.

One thing that Ding only briefly metions but to us is a major leap forward is the abilityt o drag and drop the ordering of items.  No more hitting fiddly little triangles or typing in numbers, simply grab your item and put it where you want it.  Simple, effective and probaably one of the best new features in  Joomla 3.0.  It's so natural we wonder why it wasn't there before, but that's just being nitpicky.

Another highlight from this months Community magazine is the news that Harvard are including Joomla in part of the extension development course.  How cool is that?  So now students will be learning Joomla from an early part of their own development in the CMS world.  We see this as a major step forward and hats off to who ever put in this work to make it happen.

Joomla is maturing nicely as a CMS, infact it's postively exploding as a CMS.  Developers have produced over 10,000 extensions for this CMS meaning that the core system is now extendable to make it do almost anything you want.

The size of the developer network for Joomla is simply staggering.  With Extensions as varied as church listings, to fully blown social networks, there's something for everyone in the Joomla Extension Directory.

The layout of the JED means it's easy to navigate and search for that extension you want.  Google has indexed it pretty thoroughly as well so adding "joomla" to your search term should give you a direct link to a specific Joomla Extension or a category in there.

Joomla Developers should be proud of this achievement, it's a staggering milestone for Joomla itself and we look forward to supporting it for a long time to come.

There are a couple of interesting interviews, and two great case studies on sites that Joomla Developers have put together.  Including a Music site that was a seven month project!

Our personal highlight for developers just starting out is the guide to performance of your site which gives some excellent tools that we already use for optimising a Joomla Website.

For the marketing and SEO experts there's a guide to the Panda and Penguin Updates from Google.  A bit late but still worth it.
